Hi there, my name is Christa, (aka. Coach C, Dr. C, Dr. Sumner, Christa Cooper Sumner) and this is a small part of my story and how Doing Life Dizzy came to be. So grab your favorite cup of tea and sit down in your favorite cozy chair as I share some of my journey in hopes that you will soon share yours in return.
Once upon a time, a little girl, only 10 years old, sat reading quietly in her Fourth Grade classroom. Suddenly, the room began to spin! She held tightly to her desk to avoid falling from her chair as if on a merry-go-round and it were her trusty stead. Not to be deterred from her assigned mission, she continued to read once the spinning stopped, as she brushed it off with a shrug and thought, "That was weird." Until the room spun again...
Little did I know, that spinning classroom was the beginning of a lifetime of living with vertigo.
Growing up dizzy was not easy. I missed out on a lot, hiding the real reason from friends and peers. I did not receive a diagnosis until I was 25. Instead, I was often blamed for my dizziness and vertigo leading to intense feelings of shame and guilt for a symptom I could not control. The fear of the symptom was only amplified by the shame and blame placed upon me, until it morphed into a phobia of its own.
Test after test, including torture chambers disguised as "vestibular labs" came back normal. It seemed the only consistent thing about my illness was how inconsistent it appeared.
Finally, after 15 years of seeking answers, I was told I was having vertiginous migraines, now known as vestibular migraines. The rest of my years have been in search of triggers, relief, and answers when flares leave me struggling for survival, meaning and hope. I am still human, after all.
But, I have survived, I have found meaning and purpose; and I am here to help you do the same.
Needless to say, vertigo is just one of the many symptoms I have to live with as my migraines come in many flavors. I will save the rest for another day.
Despite living with dizziness and vertigo, I have moved over 35 times, earned higher education degrees including a Bachelor’s, Dual Master’s, and Doctorate, and have taught college students and coached faculty for over 10 years.
Now, I am taking all of my passion, experience, and knowledge to help you find meaning and purpose in your life as a Certified Transformational Life Coach. Unlike typical life coaching, that calls upon energy we do not have to give and abilities we lost to illness long ago, I work with you where you are with what you have to carve a new path forward. I cannot heal you, nor can I give medical advice, but I will be here when others have moved on, when your bad days have piled up, and all you need is a small light in the darkness to find hope.
At Doing Life Dizzy, you do not have to be suffering from dizziness or vertigo to reach out. We all have our own battles to face and need a hand. Reach out soon, you’re not alone anymore.
- Finding STRENGTH in weakness - But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
